A Petition for equal attention to the Three Essential C-s of Education Preparation for Citizenship, College and Career

In today's education reform discussions we hear much about the need to prepare students for college and career. While it is vitally important to our nation's future that every student be prepared to succeed in higher education and in the workforce, it is vital to the health and future of our democracy that our schools also prepare students for a lifetime of knowledgeable, engaged, and active citizenship!

This civic mission of our nation's schools is as important today as when the founders are three essential "C"s at the heart of education in the United States: preparation for success in College, Career, and Citizenship.

We must ensure that all three 'C's are at the core of all education reforms. We must ensure each of the three 'C's receives attention, consideration, action and resources
in the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and in all education policy and funding decisions at the local, state and national levels. Truly,
the civic and economic health of the United States is dependent on each generation of students, all citizens of our nation, being adequately prepared for success in College (or higher education); for success in a Career and to be informed, engaged Citizens!

We call on the President of the United States, the United States Congress, the United States Secretary of Education, the Governors of each State, each State Schools Chief, all State Legislators, all State Boards of Education, each local Superintendent and School Board to take action now to strengthen and improve civic learning (civics, history, economics, geography, service learning linked to the classroom) policies, standards, assessments and funding. We call on all education policymakers at the local, state and national levels to ensure effective, high quality civic learning is at the core of all education reform efforts.

We the undersigned Citizens demand that policymakers take action now to restore the essential, historic civic mission of our schools to its rightful place as the co-equal purpose of education in our nation!
